Authority in Human Design
Trusting Your Innate Decision-Making Style
Authority in Human Design refers to the innate decision-making style that guides each person toward finding answers, clarity or inner truth. It emerges from the body rather than the mind, providing a reliable way to navigate choices.
There are eight different Authorities in Human Design ranging from immediate intuitive insights to longer periods of processing before reaching clarity. Authority operates naturally and consistently within each individual; it’s not something you have to strive for. By identifying your unique Authority, you can access a clear and correct sense of personal truth. This article will provide an overview of the eight Authorities in Human Design.
The easiest way to find your personal Authority is by clicking HERE on this official website and entering your birth data. Once you’ve located your personal Authority, read the corresponding summary below to find out how you are personally wired to make correct decisions as yourself.
The Key to Deconditioning: Living by Your Authority
We’ve been conditioned to seek answers outside ourselves, relying on our minds to navigate life. But Human Design reveals that our true guidance comes from within—our personal Authority—leading us to choices that bring satisfaction, success, peace and delight.
In a world flooded with conflicting information, trusting your inner compass is more essential than ever. By following your Strategy and Authority, you break free from societal conditioning and step into your unique path. Instead of overanalyzing external input, you can align with your natural flow, allowing life to unfold authentically.
How Authority Works
Your Authority is determined by which centers are defined in your BodyGraph, following the Hierarchy of Authority. Once you understand and trust your Authority, decision-making becomes easier. And as your mind is freed from the pressure of making choices, it can take its rightful place—as a wise and valuable witness to your journey, enriching others as Outer Authority.
Hierarchy of Authority – 8 Authorities
- Solar Plexus: Emotional Authority
- Sacral: Sacral Authority
- Spleen: Splenic Authority
- Heart: Ego Authority (Ego Manifested & Ego Projected Authorities)
- G: Self-Authority
- Environment: No Inner Authority
- Moon: Lunar Authority
Each Authority is described further in the following summaries.
Solar Plexus Authority
Emotional Authority

The Power of Emotional Clarity
If your Solar Plexus Center (the lower right triangle in your Human Design chart) is defined (colored in), it rules over all other authority centers—meaning your personal Authority is Emotional. This applies to about 50% of people, and if you’re one of them, your decision-making process is deeply tied to how you feel.
What Does It Mean to Have Emotional Authority?
It means your truth is revealed over time, not in an instant. You’re designed to ride your emotional wave—from hope to despair and everything in between—before reaching clarity. The best advice? Don’t make decisions at the peak of excitement or the depths of a low. Instead, give yourself time. Emotional clarity comes with patience, and while you may never feel 100% certain, a solid 70-85% clarity is your sweet spot.
How to Know When You’re Ready to Decide
A great sign that you’re in alignment with your choice? The nervousness fades. When you think about your choice and feel a deep, calm knowing—neither overly hyped nor completely indifferent—that’s your green light.
Key Questions to Ask Yourself:
✔️ “Does this feel good?”
✔️ “Does this feel right?”
✔️ “How do I feel about this over time?”
Since the Solar Plexus Center is a powerful motor, your emotions radiate warmth and magnetism. Others may feel drawn to your energy, but don’t let anyone rush you. In fact, when you ask for time, what you bring to the table often becomes even more attractive—as long as it’s truly right for both parties.
So embrace the wisdom of waiting. Your emotional depth is a gift and when you honor it, you align with your most powerful authentic decisions. 💛
Sacral Authority

The Power of Your Gut Response
If your Sacral Center (second square up from the bottom of your chart) is defined and your Solar Plexus Center (lower right triangle) is NOT defined, then you have Sacral Authority—the ultimate gut-knowing that belongs to Generators and Manifesting Generators.
Your sacral response is your built-in compass, guiding you toward what’s right for you in the moment. While Emotional Authority reveals truth over time, Sacral Authority is instant. It speaks through sound and sensation—a deep, instinctive “uh-huh” (yes) or “unh-un” (no). If your body responds with ‘hmmm’ or nothing, that’s your cue: it’s not for you right now.
Trusting Your Sacral Response
When your sacral says ‘yes’ to something—whether it’s a person, a project or an opportunity—you’ll have the energy to see it through until it’s naturally complete. If it says ‘no,’ forcing yourself will likely lead to frustration and burnout. The challenge? You’ve been conditioned to rely on your mind, but your true power lies in your gut. Learning to trust it will reduce resistance and maximize satisfaction in your life.
How to Tune Into Your Body’s Compass
To strengthen your connection with your sacral response, practice ‘yes/no’ questions with trusted friends (starting with small decisions like ‘what to eat’ and ‘what to wear’ to more impactful decisions like ‘where to live,’ ‘what job to do,’ ‘who to date,’ etc.)
✔️ “Do you want to eat these donuts?”
✔️ “Do you want to take that course?”
✔️ “Is it time to switch careers?”
By engaging your deep belly knowing in real-time decisions, you’ll start to recognize its unmistakable clarity. Your Sacral Authority is here to empower you—trust it, follow it and watch your energy align with what truly fuels you. 🔥
Splenic Authority

The Whisper of Instinct
If your Splenic Center (lower left triangle) is defined and both your Sacral and Solar Plexus Centers are undefined, then you have Splenic Authority—a powerful, instinctive awareness designed to keep you safe and healthy.
The Nature of Splenic Wisdom
Your Splenic Authority speaks in the now—a fleeting whisper, a sudden knowing or an intuitive hit that tells you whether something (or someone) is healthy for you or not. This primal survival awareness is instant, quiet and precise. But here’s the challenge: it’s so fast that it’s easy to miss.
Doubt and second-guessing come when your mind tries to override the message. Unlike Emotional Authority, which needs time, or Sacral Authority, which speaks in deep gut responses, Splenic Authority is swift, subtle and intuitive. It doesn’t analyze or plan—it simply knows.
Learning to Trust Your Splenic Voice
Your inner compass is always guiding you, but it takes practice and presence to hear it. Since the Splenic Center isn’t concerned with the future—only the immediate moment—it’s about learning to trust the first signal you receive.
Think of it this way:
Emotional Authority is hot and slow—clarity comes over time.
Splenic Authority is cool and fast—a fleeting instinct in the now.
How to Recognize Your Splenic Knowing
✔️ A quiet certainty that something is (or isn’t) right.
✔️ A subtle internal shift—a pull toward or away from something.
✔️ A sudden whisper of intuition that disappears if you hesitate.
Tuning into your Splenic wisdom is about deep trust and quick action. The more you listen, the more you realize your instincts were right all along.
Heart/Ego Manifested Authority

Speak Your Truth into Reality
If your Sacral, Solar Plexus, and Splenic Centers are undefined (white), but your Heart/Ego Center (the smallest triangle just right of the center) is defined and connected to the Throat Center, you have Heart/Ego Manifested Authority—the power to speak your truth into existence.
Your Voice is Your Guide
Your authority isn’t found in overthinking or strategizing—it’s revealed through your voice. What you say in the moment carries your deepest truth, often before your mind even catches up. Instead of planning, scripting, or controlling your words, let them flow naturally—that’s when your real power shines.
Trust Your Spoken Truth
✔️ Your words shape your reality—pay attention to what naturally comes out.
✔️ You’re designed to lead—your voice initiates action and influence.
✔️ Impact is key—when you speak authentically, you command attention.
Rather than following your thoughts, follow your voice. It will guide you exactly where you need to go—boldly, impactfully and with purpose.
Heart/Ego Projected Authority

The Will to Lead (When Invited)
If your Sacral, Solar Plexus, and Splenic Centers are undefined (white), but your Heart/Ego Center (Willpower) is defined and connected to the yellow G Center (Identity) through the Channel of Initiation (25-51)—then you are a Projector with a rare and powerful authority.
Navigating Life with Heart/Ego Projected Authority
With a strong sense of identity (G Center) surrounded by several undefined centers, it’s easy to absorb and amplify the energy of others. Your one true anchor? Your Projector Strategy—being recognized and waiting for the right invitation. Unlike Manifestors, you’re not here to initiate, and without a motor connected to the Throat Center, trying to force action will likely lead to resistance.
The Power of Waiting for Recognition
When correctly invited, you can be a transformational force—a guide, a leader or a catalyst for deep change. But if you operate as your Not-Self—pushing, initiating or trying to build like a Generator—you’ll hit roadblocks and frustration instead of success.
Key to Decision-Making: “What’s in it for me?”
Since your Heart/Ego Center (Willpower) is your decision-making motor, always check in with what you truly desire:
✔️ “Do I want this?”
✔️ “Is this worth my energy?”
If your Heart/Ego has the willpower and drive for something, it will see it through. If not, forcing it will likely lead to burnout.
Keeping Your Heart/Ego Healthy
- Make and keep promises—Your Ego thrives on commitment.
- Balance work and rest—The Ego/Heart Center needs recovery to stay strong.
- Refine your mastery—While waiting for the right invitations, invest time in learning systems that will allow you to guide others effectively.
When you enter decisions correctly and align with your true desires, your willpower becomes an unstoppable force—leading you to recognition, success and deep fulfillment.
Self-Projected Authority

Your Truth Speaks Through You
If you have Self-Projected Authority, your decision-making power flows from your G Center (Identity, Love, and Direction) to your Throat Center (Communication and Manifestation) through one of 4 channels. In other words—your voice holds the key to your truth.
Your Identity Speaks—Listen Closely
You don’t need to overthink or analyze your decisions. Instead, pay attention to what naturally comes out of your mouth when responding to an invitation. Your truth is always being expressed through the core of your identity. Rather than trying to craft the “right” answer, simply speak—your direction is revealed as you talk.
How to Align with Your Authority
Ask yourself:
✔️ “Will this make me happy?”
✔️ “Will this help me express myself authentically?”
✔️ “Am I heading in the right direction?”
Speak these questions out loud in the presence of others—not so they can give advice, but so you can hear yourself. Your voice is your inner compass. When you trust it, you’ll naturally move toward what is truly right for you.
Environmental Authority
Mental Projected Authority

Your Surroundings Shape Your Clarity
If you have Environmental Authority, your decision-making power isn’t internal—it’s shaped by the spaces and people around you. This rare authority occurs when your Ajna Center (Mind) is connected to either the Head (Inspiration), the Throat (Expression), or all three together, while everything below the Throat remains open.
Your Environment is Everything
With so much openness in your design, you absorb and amplify energy from the world around you. If your environment feels wrong, everything—your work, relationships, and decisions—will feel off. This means your first filter for clarity isn’t your thoughts—it’s your surroundings.
How to Navigate Decisions
Ask yourself:
✔️ “Is this environment right for me?”
✔️ “Do I feel clear and supported in this space?”
✔️ “Am I around the right people?”
Whether choosing where to live, work, or spend time, don’t rely on logic alone—physically go there and see how your body responds to the space. If it feels off, trust that. The right environment brings the right clarity.
Your Mind is an Outer Authority
As a Mental Projector, your mind is powerful—but doesn’t work well for making personal decisions. Instead, it works best as an Outer Authority—a guide for others, when recognized and invited. Your real decision-making process happens when you talk things out with trusted friends as sounding boards.
By verbalizing your thoughts in supportive environments, you’ll naturally find clarity. Your wisdom emerges when you listen—not just to your mind, but to the spaces and voices that reflect your truth back to you.
Lunar Authority

Flowing with the Rhythm of the Moon
If you have Lunar Authority, you are a Reflector, a rare being whose guidance comes from the Moon’s 28-day cycle rather than an internal energy source. Unlike the other 3 Solar Types, who can make decisions in the moment or over time, you are designed to move with the natural rhythm of the lunar cycle—embracing patience, reflection and deep wisdom.
Decisions Take Time—And That’s Your Superpower
Every 28 days, the Moon activates all 64 gates in the Human Design Mandala, creating a consistent pattern throughout your life. This means your decision-making clarity comes from waiting at least one full lunar cycle before making important choices.
When you honor this process, life becomes an unfolding mystery, full of surprise and delight. But if you allow the world to rush you into quick decisions, disappointment and imbalance can take over. Your greatest gift is the ability to observe, reflect and flow—allowing the right answers to emerge naturally over time.
Your Environment Shapes Your Well-Being
As a Reflector, you mirror the energy of your surroundings. If you’re in a toxic space—with unhealthy people or dysfunctional systems—you’ll absorb and reflect that dis-ease. But if you’re in a harmonious, thriving environment, you’ll radiate that same well-being.
Your #1 Priority? Being in the right place with the right people.
Your G Center is completely open, meaning your sense of identity and direction comes from the energy around you. Trust your intuition when choosing your spaces—it directly impacts your happiness, health and ability to make aligned decisions.
Your Strategy: Talking It Out
Because you process life through reflection, it’s essential to talk through your thoughts with trusted friends or advisors. Not for their advice—but so you can hear yourself. Over time, as you discuss your options, your truth will become clear in a deep, undeniable way.
The Reflector’s Magic: A Life of Wonder
You’re not here to be like anyone else—you’re here to experience life in its fullest, ever-changing flow. When you honour your Lunar Authority, you unlock the ability to:
- Wait for clarity instead of rushing decisions
- Surround yourself with the right energy to stay in alignment.
- Trust the unfolding process—life is meant to surprise and delight you!
Your magic lies in your ability to reflect the world around you, offering wisdom, insight and perspective in a way no other Type can. Give yourself time, honour your rhythm and let life reveal its beauty—one moon cycle at a time.
