The Power of Showing Up

Why Your Presence Matters

It was one of those days—packed to the brim with to-dos and a whirlwind of commitments. I darted from task to meeting, then to a gathering with friends, only to find myself grooving at a concert by evening. My day was bursting with activity, yet amidst the hustle, a small but potent thought surfaced during lunch. I took a deep breath, allowed gratitude to wash over me, and then I realized: how much it matters that we simply show up. For ourselves. For others.

This reflection led me to ponder about how often people don’t fully step into the opportunities life serves up. Why? Mostly, it’s a lack of trust—trust in their ability to contribute meaningfully, or an underestimation of the immense impact their mere presence holds.

When You Show Up, Magic Happens

Think about the ripple effect you create by just being present. It’s easy to underestimate, especially when you’re caught in self-doubt or overwhelmed by challenges. How many times have you avoided showing up because you thought, “What difference can I really make? Here’s the truth: You’re already making a difference, often in ways you might not even realize. A smile to a stranger, a listening ear for a friend, or simply being attentive in a meeting—these seemingly small acts matter. When you show up with intention, you create ripples of connection, inspiration, and possibility. You remind people of the magic of being human.

We are often reminded of a story that Snatam Kaur shared with us one time while she and her family stayed with us. When asked about how she got started singing Kirtan, she described that for months she showed up to offer Kirtan at a huge church in California. For months, no one came to her events, except for her. She sang regardless and performed to an audience of one. Over time, people started to hear about her and they showed up to her Kirtans. These days she fills concert halls and has blessed thousands with her devotional mantras. What inspired us was that she was willing to show up for herself and for her devotional practices, no matter what. Those simple acts of showing up, over and over again, created an energy, an invitation, a declaration of what was important to her. Little by little as she continuously showed up, the people started to come.

What Stops You?

For many of us, the temptation to withdraw can be strong, especially when life feels overwhelming or when we feel powerless to change things. Have you ever felt that urge? To just pull away from a challenge, a person or even yourself? It’s not uncommon. But here’s the thing: Showing up, even imperfectly, has more power than you think.

Juna’s Perfectly Imperfect Showing Up Story

Just the other day, I showed up for a scary-to-me challenge. I’m currently apprenticing to be a Music Together teacher, facilitating kids 0-5 yrs in basic music competency through a beautiful music and movement program in my hometown. Well, it was just two days ago that it was time for me to lead a couple of songs… yup that’s me singing and dancing with little ones and their parents & caregivers  in 2 classes back to back. I showed up, nerves and all. Was it perfect? Absolutely not. Did I lead 2 songs like I said I would? Absolutely yes. I showed up. Imperfectly perfect in the moment with all I had to offer. I was proud of myself for showing up and doing something out of my comfort zone for the very first time. I broke through fears of perfectionism and did it anyway… even laughing to myself as I watched a pair of little hands grab my “cheat sheet” and toddle away from me! Pretty sure the fairies were having a good laugh too!

How did I notice the power of me showing up? For several weeks before, I showed up and participated, but did not lead anything. But the day I guided 2 songs, I received more smiles and words from the parents and three random kiddos came up to me and gave me spontaneous hugs for the first time. Interesting! Did I make more of an impact when I showed up more fully as myself in my vulnerability?

We live in a world where constant performance is valued, and yet what truly connects us is presence. Showing up isn’t about having it all figured out. It’s about being authentic, bringing your energy, and saying, ‘I’m here, as I am.’ And that, my friend, is enough.

How to Show Up—Simple Reminders

  1. Pause and Breathe: Before diving into your next task or interaction, take a deep breath. Center yourself. This simple practice helps connect you to the present moment and amplifies your energy.
  2. Acknowledge Your Value: Trust that you have something unique to offer—whether it’s your perspective, your kindness, or your creativity. Your presence is a gift.
  3. Be Curious: Showing up doesn’t always mean having the answers. Sometimes it’s about being open, listening, and exploring what unfolds.
  4. Find Your Rhythm: Life is a dance between doing and being. Make space for rest and reflection so you can show up more fully in the moments that matter.

Gratitude as Your Ally:How to Show Up When You’re in a Bad Mood

What if, despite your best efforts, you find yourself slipping into negativity? Perhaps Aunt Lucy’s commentary is grating or the conversation has turned to topics that raise your stress levels. This is where gratitude becomes your ally. Gratitude is a heart activator. When you focus on even the smallest things you appreciate—the color of your socks, the curl bouncing on your aunt’s head or the simple fact that everyone is gathered together—it can shift your energy profoundly.

Science shows that gratitude stimulates heart-brain coherence, a state in which your heart and brain synchronize. This coherence fosters emotional balance, reduces stress and even improves your communication. More than that, gratitude changes your energetic field. It transforms what you emit, allowing you to bring a sense of calm and connection into the room.

The Bigger Picture

Our presence in the world is not just about fulfilling responsibilities or ticking boxes. It’s about being awake to the experience of living—about connecting with others and, most importantly, with ourselves. When we show up fully, we light up the spaces we occupy, encouraging others to do the same.

If you find yourself struggling to show up, ask yourself: What if my presence is the missing piece in someone else’s puzzle? What if, by being here, I make a difference I may never fully see?

The world needs your energy, your light, and your unique flavor of genius. So, take the leap—show up as you are. That’s where the magic begins.
