What does it mean to trust the wisdom within your body —the compass of your personal authority? And how can this help you break free from codependency, allowing you to listen to your personal authority, rather than constantly seeking external validation? In this blog we contemplate a modern day conundrum and look at ways to break free from what plagues many of us in this codependent cycle.
Our Story: Turning Inward to Break Codependent Habits
Reflecting on the dynamics of codependency, we recently created a challenge for ourselves regarding a particular codependent dynamic—not the co-dependency we typically associate with relationships but a more modern form: codependency with the internet, social media and the endless stream of information at our fingertips. It struck us how often we had been listening to external information before checking in with our inner guidance.
Our iPhones had transformed into our frequently consulted “mini oracles,” demanding to be the center of our attention.
To change that, we decided to: reduce screen time, particularly in the mornings and evenings, and instead use that time to tune inward—to reflect, connect and play. Novel notion, yes?!!!
It’s been humbling to notice how reflexively we still reach for our phones when they ding, ring or vibrate. How quickly we turn to the internet to check the weather instead of stepping outside and feeling the air for ourselves. We aim to shift the habit of rushing to find answers, choosing instead to linger with questions and embrace the process of inquiry. Equally, we seek to temper the addictive gratification of declaring, “Ah, now I know!” without genuinely engaging with or deeply exploring the subject.
In just two days of our self-imposed challenge, we met countless “goobers” (as Sabine likes to call them) within ourselves—tiny habits and impulses that revealed how much of our inner guidance we’ve outsourced. And we’re pretty sure there’s more to uncover!
Codependency and the Gift of Sensitivity
The story we’re living aligns beautifully with the teachings of this week’s focus on the 19th Hexagram, which governs themes of sensitivity, interdependence and connection. In the shadow frequency, the 19th Hexagram represents codependency—a state where we seek validation, security or fulfillment outside of ourselves. This shadow often arises from a fear of disconnection, driving us to latch onto others, systems or external resources to fill the void within.
What if codependency could serve as a stepping stone toward developing true sensitivity? According to The Gene Keys, codependency is a lower harmonic of “interdependence,” which thrives on sensitivity. At its lower frequency, codependency reveals the budding potential for sensitivity to others but manifests as a shadow—a boundaryless, insatiable hunger. In this context, “sensitivity” doesn’t imply rejecting connection or relationships; rather, it’s about deeply attuning to the needs of others while remaining rooted in a sense of personal wholeness.
Human Design offers us a powerful lens through which to explore this transformation. The 19th Gate, located in the Root Center, speaks to our primal need for connection and community. In its low vibration, this can manifest as dependency on the tribe, a fear of being left out or an over-reliance on others to fulfill our needs for validation. But when we tune into our personal authority, we begin to shift this dynamic.
We move from needing others to validate us to becoming deeply attuned to our own rhythms and truths. From this starting place of wholeness we can be sensitive to the needs of others without being insensitive to our own needs. We metaphorically put on the oxygen mask first before tending to our loved ones, thus creating a healthy sense of “interdependence.”
Replacing External Dependence with Inner Knowing
Our on-going experiment with reducing screen time isn’t just about breaking a habit or digital detoxing, it’s about reconnecting with our personal authority. By pausing before reaching for the phone or googling the answer, we’re creating space for something else to emerge—our own sense of things.
For most people, their personal authority resides in the body and for none of us does it ever come from the mind. Whether it’s the slow moving Emotional Authority, the fast intuitive whispers of the Spleen or the sacral “uh-huh” of response, our bodies are constantly guiding us. But we have to listen. In a world filled with distractions and instant gratification, listening requires intention.

The Gift of Sensitivity
This week, as we continue to work with the energy of the 19th Hexagram, we see that sensitivity isn’t about fragility; it’s about attunement. It’s about listening deeply—to your body, to your intuition and to the subtle signals of life energy. Sensitivity allows you to connect with others and the world from a place of sovereignty rather than codependence.
When you listen to and follow your personal authority, you begin to cultivate this sensitivity. You become more aware of what truly serves you and what doesn’t. You start to honor your boundaries and recognize that your personal authority is the wisest guide you’ll ever have.
An Invitation
So, here’s a challenge… should you choose to accept it!: Experiment with tuning inward before reaching for your phone.
- Pause Before Reacting
The next time you feel the urge to check your phone, ask yourself: “What am I really looking for?” Is it connection, reassurance or simply distraction? No judgement, just notice. Instead of acting immediately, take a moment to breathe and tune into your body. - Experiment with Your Personal Authority
Start small. Before making a decision, whether choosing what to eat for dinner or how to spend your weekend, check in with your personal authority. What does it say? What do you already know? - Create Space for Silence
Carve out moments in your day to sit or move quietly, without distractions. Let your thoughts settle and see what emerges. This practice strengthens your ability to hear your unique voice of truth. - Reconnect with Nature
Step outside and notice the natural rhythms around you. Feel the air, observe the sky and listen to the sounds. Nature has its own wisdom. Tuning into it can help reconnect you with your own.
Reflect on Your Co-Dependencies
Become aware of areas where you might be outsourcing your power. Where or with whom are you seeking validation, security or answers outside of yourself? How might you bring those sources of support inward?
And if you’re ready to dive deeper into understanding your inner authority and breaking free from the shadows of codependency, let’s connect. Your body holds the answers. Are you ready to listen?

What a beautiful invitation! I have definitely become “co-dependent” on my phone…even “catching up” on calls while taking my daily walk recently. I’m going to stop doing that again and simply reconnect with me and nature while walking and disconnect from the “noise” of my phone. Thank you Sabine!
Glad you found this inspiring enough to take the “challenge” to realize the codependent relationship between yourself and your mini oracle and change your behaviour! Woot woot!
The space for silence on Brighid’s days, the four quarter. Happy Year of the Wood Snake!
Celebrating all of that with you <3
